Welcome to
the home page of the Ardcairnie Angus stud, located on the Albany Highway
just south of Kojonup in the Great Southern of Western Australia, approximately
250km south of Perth. The stud was formed in the mid 1980's in Denbarker
and has been based on historic Maybenup since March 1998. Maybenup is
one of the oldest farming properties in the area, having originally been
settled around 1850. Interestingly, successive owners over the past 50
years have run Angus cattle over its paddocks.
Jim and Pam McGregor run a breeding operation with currently around 360 stud and commercial
Angus cows and heifers in an average season, producing bulls for their
annual on farm sale, PTIC heifers and cows (when surplus to our requirements)
and a trading operation using whatever stock seems best value.
All the females in the breeding herds are registered with the Angus Society of Australia
in the Herd Book Register (HBR), the Angus Performance Register (APR)
and the Angus Commercial Register (ACR). All females are in Angus Group
Breedplan which gives Estimated Breeding Values (EBV's) and $Index values
for all females and their progeny to add to studmaster Jim McGregor's
assessment of structure, conformation and temperament. The McGregors value
this objective data to progress their breeding programme. Breedplan is
another tool that breeders can use to improve the genetic potential of
their herds, and to benchmark their cattle against others in the national
herd. However, structure, conformation and temperament are equally
important in breeding selection! BUT we do place emphasis on the use of
of Breedplan as it allows us to gauge our genetic progress. We dont
only want to produce good-looking cattle - we want to keep improving their
genetic, profit driving traits.
Over a few years, the stock watering system and fencing has been re-organised. There
are now 85 paddocks of varying sizes between 5 and 40 hectares. A house
has been built and Jim and Pam have been in residence since the first
day of Spring 2004. The garden and yard are still very much works in progress!
Jim and Pam welcome visitors - please ring to arrange a mutually suitable time.
